More from Ole Blue Eyes Classic Sinatra | Point of No Return | Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely | The Capitol Years | Tone Poems of Color | Come Dance with Me! |
Amazon.com: One of the most conceptually daring of Sinatra's Capitol albums returns to print in this 24-bit remaster. Close to You put the singer and arranger Nelson Riddle together with the Hollywood String Quartet, a small rhythm section, and guests including Sinatra regular Harry "Sweets" Edison for one of his most intimate sets. The delivery is very conversational and especially suits lyrics like "Blame It on My Youth," "I Couldn't Sleep a Wink Last Night," and Johnny Mercer's wry "P.S. I Love You." These emotionally generous ballads are often relaxed but are no less intense for it. Three bonus tracks complete the 1956 Close sessions and include a straight-faced reading of the Bing Crosby novelty number "There's a Flaw in My Flue." A marvelous disc that both stands on its own and demonstrates the flexibility of the era's downbeat Sinatra. --Rickey Wright

I grew up listening to songs from this album being sang by my uncles, accompanying themselves on the guitar. As a baby boomer I belong to the rock and roll era but, Frank Sinatra has been infused in my blood. You can say he is part of my musical psyche. People who don't understand concept albums shouldn't venture into the world of Sinatra. They might not survive the trip. To be able to appreciate his music, you just have to "take in" the mood it conveys. Then you'll understand why it is what it is. A truly great album, but then only a hardcore Sinatraphile can say that.

Often forgotten in the pantheon of great Sinatra albums, "Close To You And More" is in fact one of Frank Sinatra's most universally satisfying efforts. His voice is in great shape, the songs are excellent, and of course he's working with Nelson Riddle, who never recorded a bad album with The Master.
The environment for the record is very smooth and relaxed. In contrast to the larger array of musicians Frank was accustomed to recording with, the backing musicians for "Close To You" are the Hollywood String Quarter, a minimalist rhythm section, and a few guest musicians (including the famous Harry "Sweets Edison"). Frank's singing on the album is some of his best. His voice doesn't rise to the operatic peaks of later masterworks such ... Read More:

This is easily the worst Sinatra/Riddle/Capitol record and I'm not surprised it's been unavailable for years.Sinatra wanted to record something with the Hollywood String Quartet and this is the result. He's in wonderful voice, but the material stinks and Riddle's scores are painfully dragging. He simply doesn't have enough musicians on these dates and the strings are headache inducing."Blame It On My Youth" is the standout, but you can keep the rest. The emperor has no clothes on this one

Frank Sinatra has to be the finest performer and recording artist of the 20th Century. A music critic mentioned 'something very special had to be going on inside the man to produce music like he has'. I always thought this statement captured a very accurate profile of Sinatra.
The quality of this cd like many of the others from the artist are very intimate - as if they are performed for the listener at home. Highly recommended. Personally I prefer "For Only The Lonely" but this cd is also a must have for your collection.
If you like something more up-beat than "Songs For Swinging Lovers" is IMHO - probably the best recording from Sinatra - it happens to be in mono but don't let that influence your purchase.

This album is the other book-end to go with "Only the Lonely". Frank Sinatra did much, much work, but never exceeded these albums in artistic quality, i.e. addressing the human condition in universal terms, and with a maximum of un-forced feeling. Sweets Edison, of course, is the constant commentator through his muted horn who never fails to synch in with judicious sensibility and right-on sensitivity. "Close to You" equals "OTL" in nostalgic chops, but floats more serenely above the depths. In this album the depths are plainly there to contemplate, while in the other one you are IN the depths.
