It is impossible to fault the engineering, the pace of the performances or the radiant sound of the orchestra. What makes the CD most special, however, is clarinet playing by Steven D. Hartman that serves as a model of aristocratic bearing and lyricism. Mr. Hartman's directness, emotional authority and effortless technique reveal the heart of these concertos by another clarinet virtuoso, whose musical ideas will enrich everyone who comes to know them.
