Editorial Review: Amazon.com: Yet another compilation of Al Green's classic Hi Records work from the '70s, the double-CD autobiography tie-in Take Me to the River serves more as a substitute for than a supplement to his Greatest Hits and More Greatest Hits. However you get these tracks, though, get 'em: Green, producer Willie Mitchell, and the celebrated Hi rhythm section practically redefined the sensuous and the sinuous in soul music. In addition to timeless singles such as "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Look What You Done for Me," River also collects lesser-known but equally magical slices of sexy romance such as the title track and "I'm Glad You're Mine." While not as full a portrait of this one-of-a-kind artist (and man) as the three-CD Anthology, it's a worthy introduction. --Rickey Wright Customer Reviews

 Rating:  - Simply Fantastic.Al Green is like sex -- the worst I ever had was wonderful. How someone gives this album 1 star is beyond me. The sound quality isn't perfect, but totally adequate -- particularly, given the likely condition of the original master tapes and the facilities in which most of these recordings were made (Google Royal Recording Studio in Memphis, and you'll get the idea). I don't think you are likely to find any better quality recordings of Al Green's music. Most Green fans will have heard most of this material. It is a fantastic retrospective on the music of an absolute industry giant. It you don't have this album, you should. Rating: - Al Green had it.Good quality product. Tons of tunes. Top notch vocals are Al Green's trademark. Plenty of soul. The only drawback is that the producer recorded lame horn arrangements. Rating: - TAKE ME TO THE RIVERA MUST HAVE, THIS IS AL GREEN AT HIS BEST, HE DOES SOME OLD TUNES THAT REALLY LET YOU KNOW HE STILL GOT IT. Rating: - ...there's a goings-on goin' on......there are some shortcomings in the sound quality on a couple of songs and if you are a serious Al Green fan then you probably already own most of the material on this release, especially on disc 1, but come on now...THIS IS THE BEST COLLECTION OF HIS MATERIAL TO DATE!...you have the meat of most of his classics and the gravy of some of his lesser-knowns. HERE I AM (COME AND TAKE ME) is an ultimate slow-burner for me, PLUS: HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART? RIGHT NOW, RIGHT NOW? this album is butter! Rating: - The Best from the King of Memphis SoulThe Reverend Al Green's talents are on full display in 2-disc collection that is a must for any fan of R&B. Talk about a great walk down memory lane--Al can take me to the river anytime. I recently toured the Smithsonian "Rock & Soul" exhibit in Memphis and it reinforced what a significant position Al holds in modern music. |
