Editorial Review:
Album Description: A new work by this instrumental group from Minas Gerais. All 10 pieces were composed by American minimalist composer Philip Glass. Inspired by the rivers of the Amazon.
Amazon.com: Uakti's Aguas de Amazona is a splendid suite of liquid light manifesting itself in nine riverlike tunes that splash, wend, trickle, and gush toward the fantastical changeling closer, "Metamorphosis." A Brazilian ensemble, Uakti (pronounced wah-keh-chee) weave a chordal interplay of strings, woodwinds, and homemade percussion pieces that create complex and exotic contrapuntal melodies evoking both wind chimes and dancing water. Fittingly, the group takes its name from a mythic Amazonian creature who, as legend tells, was an enormous entity with holes running through its body, and as it would run through the forest, the wind would pass through its orifices, creating a magically beautiful music. Adding to the great pleasure of this project is the group's collaboration with renowned composer Philip Glass, whose experimental and classical blend finds itself well met in the enchanting hands of Uakti. Highly recommended for fans of Moondog, Harry Partch, Paul Winter, the Kronos Quartet, and Glenn Branca. --Paige La Grone

Phillip Glass is the newest name on the list of my favorite 3 composers of all time, Bach and John Coltrane being the other two. I must admit, some Phillip Glass can bore the life out of living entity. This album sounds natural and resonates tremendously more-so than any album made by modern/traditional orchestral instruments. The flutes are my favorite, they pierce the air with massive strength but also have a round, very natural, and very warm sound. This album definitely lets you know how the indigenous people feel about nature.

Start with one quart Amazon water. Mix in 1/2 cup Glass bullion. Add 1 tbs fresh exotic percussion. Pinch in flute, tabla, xylophone, pepper pipes and marimba root. A vivacious CD of fast tempoed rhythms and floating melodies. These modern compositions are harmoniously integrated into instruments of nature. The choice of instruments is well calculated, remaining close to the model of nature which Glass intended. A liquid rhythum dominates from the background as swirling melodies enlighten this musical experience. Every time I play this CD my spirit lightens. And thats beautiful.

I am a rabid Glass fan. I have 16 of his CDs, yet was a bit skittish about purchasing one more. This masterpiece is just that. A masterpiece. Possibly one of his finest. UAKTI a fine group of musicians perform wonderfully with driving beats, skill, style and an excellent "feel" for Glass's sense of direction and "vision". A wonderful CD to listen at any time. Don't expect Enya to croon "Orinico Flow" on this gem. My two favorites are "Paru River" and "Xingu River". See if you don't agree! If you are a Philip Glass fan this is a must have.

I am not a fan of Philip Glass because I get tired with his music, but in this case the instruments save the day. The echoes and dripping sounds make you feel immersed in another kind of atmosphere. It is extremely different to the point that it alerts you to start listening to your daily sounds from a new angle. The rhythms are very lively yet soothing. I saw this group on the DVD "sede de peixe" (fish's thirst) by Milton Nascimento: they perform one song there.

At first, when I bought this CD, I was a little nervous about what I would hear. I didn't, in all honesty, know what I was buying, but when I got home and actually listened to it, I was very pleased. Glass, yet again, has created a work which ia both beautiful and exhilerating with its simple, repetative rhythms but can somehow keeps the listener listening. I'd say this is a must-have for any Glass fan.
