Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Tongue firmly in cheek, Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliott once referred to his band's wildly successful anthemic hard rock as "deep and meaningless." Indeed, while peers of the Sheffield punters were scrambling to embrace successive waves of punk, new wave, alternative, and post-whatever, the Leps stayed true to their arena-rock roots and became one of the most successful, if least hyped, bands of the 1980s and early '90s. Only their 1996 album Slang bowed to market trends; its disappointing showing only spurred a return to familiar form on Euphoria. The band also brought producer and de facto sixth band member Robert "Mutt" Lange back into the fold for a trio of tracks, including "Promises," a seamless wall of hooks that outshines even the band's Pyromania and Hysteria prime. And if the Lep-Lange lineup bats only .333 (faltering on the goofy, Prince-ly funk of "All Night" and the bubble-gum pop of "It's Only Love") this inning, they redeem themselves with balladry that beats post-Diane Warren Aerosmith at their own game ("Goodbye") and enough glossy energy ("Demolition Man," "Back in Your Face," "Day After Day," "King of Oblivion") to reclaim their strange niche on the pop plateau midway between AC/DC and Abba. Though they've largely been left out of the critical debate, Def Leppard long ago established their credentials as power-pop monsters with the public. All that's left for the pundits to decide is: Def Leppard--band out of time or band for the ages? --Jerry McCulley

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Commercial rock heaven!
Do you love music with heavy production and huge vocal harmonies? Are you always looking for songs with massive hooks? Then this is the album for you! This has everything a fan of heavily produced commercial rock could ever want. I love this album and think it's a great companion to Hysteria and fits in nicely with Def Leppard's best. The whole album is essential listening and I can happily recommend it to fans of this genre.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Tactful use of the "skip" button on your CD player can turn this into a 10-track, five-star Def Leppard CD!
I'd give it 3 1/2 stars as is. About 2/3 of this album really delivers to the fans of "Hysteria" and "Adrenalize", but it suffers from the Aerosmith-Nine-Lives syndrome of watering down a great hard rock album with way too many mediocre ballads. The 8 rockin' songs are fine examples of Def Leppard's lush signature pop-metal sound, with plenty of energy and fun, while several of the 5 slower songs are more a modern alternopop that I don't care for. "Promises" is a decent ballad - it could have come off of "Adrenalize".

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - IF YA DON'T HAVE IT, YA GOTTA GET IT!
In light of the latest release "songs from the sparkle lounge" I felt the need to write this review. I've bought every release as soon as it came out since "high 'n dry" so I have been through the ups and downs with the band. When they stick to what they do best as with this release they are as close to a perfect rock band as any. Sparkle lounge to me sounds way too much like the experimental "slang" and "x" for my liking.

Just listen to "paper sun" or "day after day" or "promises" and you'll see what I mean, they would easily fit in to any pre-slang album. No silly sequencing or goofy electronic drum kits just pure straight ahead ROCK AND ROLL! PLEASE GUYS, STICK TO WHAT YOU DO BEST, TRUST ME IT IS WHAT THE FANS REALLY WANT TO ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good 80's Style Effort
So after putting out an interesting and diverse album such as "Slang" during the tail end of the Grunge movement the boys figured it was safe enough in the late 90's to recapture some of their 80's fans with a full-out 80's rock album. Well, they pretty much succeeded. There are some great rock songs like "Demolition Man", "Promises", "Paper Sun", "Guilty", "Day After Day", and "Kings of Oblivion" but then there are weird tunes that don't quite find the mark such as "Back In Your Face" and "All Night". Unfortunately they throw a couple "Adrenalize" style ballads on here as well which really drag down the album. However, if you're quick on the skip button this is a very enjoyable Def Leppard album and falls in line nicely with their 80's material.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - good album!
the work o def leppard is highly recommended. a lotta times bands like these get underrated n that's such plain sad. a lot other bands that produce just noise get overrated n that's even worse. it's a good album worth collectin.
