Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: How do you fill the ruby slippers of Judy Garland? That's a question, thankfully, only Jessica Grove needs to answer. It's difficult not to hear indelible tunes like "Over the Rainbow" and "We're Off to See the Wizard" without thinking way back to the MGM movie version of 1939, but this touring-cast production uses unique enough music arrangements to stand on its own. Though two stars grace the album's cover--Mickey Rooney as the Wizard and Eartha Kitt as the Wicked Witch of the West--the pair hardly overshadow the upstart cast. Dirk Lombard as the Tin Man, Judith McCauley as Glinda the Good Witch, and Grove herself all deliver inspired performances, and some of the tunes--especially the "Munchkinland" medley--sound superb and remarkably fresh. Judy Garland (for most of us) will always own the role of Dorothy, but this musical does its best to breathe new life into a classic story--60 years after the fact. --Jim Young

I had to rate 3 because I had to rate in the middle. This album can be good or bad, depending on who is listening to it. It is good for those who want simple, upbeat, quick, renditions of the song. It is not good for those looking to hear the songs in their entirety or attempt to learn them for a stage production (There are WAY too many cuts and changes to do that here!). I bought this album because I am an Oz collector. Also, I will give them credit on their decision to include the Witch in "The Jitterbug."
Jessica Grove` has a beautiful voice, however, a bit too operatic for the role of Dorothy. Lara Teeter, an amazing Scarecrow (and you may also note this was not his first time in the role). The rest of the cast is pretty ... Read More:

I saw this show live at MSG when it was running back in 1998, Mickey Rooney was so funny. He did a great job, and knowing Judy Garland was the original Dorothy, she would have loved the way he did it. Jessica Grove did a good job, she sang with a sweet tone, her acting ability was good, but could have been better when delivering her lines. Eartha Kitt, did awsome as the wicked Witch, I know some of you might not know her, but during her number "Jitter Bug", she did her Cat perring sound from when she played Catwoman. Back from when she appeared on the 1960's batman tv show. She did it in a spunky way but she still had her nasty side. She gave her character her own attitude twards the wicked witch. The rest of the cast did great, the Scarcrow ... Read More:

I saw this show at Bass Hall, I have the movie, I have the In Concert version, I was also in a version and now this version comes around and screws things up! The girl for Dorothy has a lovley singing voice and plays Dorothy very well, but why should she TALK LIKE AN IDIOT! She makes Dorothy sound like this twelve year old retarted child!
Ethel Kitt and Micky Rooney were both horid cast as who they were! Mickey Rooney sounds like he could die any minute and Ethel Kitt is just not right for the Wicked Witch at all.
The munskins voices are squeeky and anoying and arn't very good. And everyone else is just not up to scratch. They are following in the footsteps of very famous people here and they just DON'T cut it. Trust me I know how ... Read More:

Thankfully, in 1998 the powers that be over at Madison Square Garden decided to record their version (a slightly altered Royal Shakespeare Company version) of THE WIZARD OF OZ and we should all be very thankful that they did. This CD is quite possibly the best recording of The Wizard of Oz to ever hit the shelves (or lack thereof). As far as content is concerned, this CD is the reigning champ!!! Most of the dialogue has been retained in order to be able to fully appreciate the performances of Mickey Rooney (as the Wizard, The Guard, Professor Marvel, etc.) and Eartha Kitt (Miss Gultch and the ultra wicked yet, because of Kitt, incredibly sexy, Wicked Witch of the West). She even gets to sing!!! For over sixty years the Wicked Witch has been ... Read More:
