Editorial Review: Amazon.com: Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell Customer Reviews

 Rating:  - Very Average Bluegrass CDNot Great sound quality, Look for a CD by a group called "Shades of Grass" if you like great Bluegrass music. Rating:  - Best introduction to Traditional Bluegrass that I have seenBest introduction to Traditional Bluegrass that I have seen. It has probably the best known songs in bluegrass. If you listen to bluegrass at all, you will probably know some of them. But this is only a stepping stone. From here you can move on to albums by the invidual artists as well as others like "The Seldom Scene". Or possibly "new grass" like "Hayseed Dixie" They do some interesting covers of AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd and other groups. Rating: - Can't get any better than thisThis is the definitive one-stop choice for a package of all-time classic bluegrass hits in their original forms, and at a bargain price to boot. I enjoy the fact that the collection takes a long view, running from the oldest bluegrass tunes from Bill Monroe, originator of the genre, to a modern practitioner like Alison Krauss. Don't fail to read the liner notes, they're very informative and well-written. Rating:  - Not a fan of stomp afterall3 stars may be unfair b/c I may be prejudised in that I'm not a fan of stomp afterall (apparently). I love all types of music, including bluegrass and the twangiest of twang...but this seemed a bit repetitive to me. If you're a stomp fan, I'm sure you'll love this...if you're dabbling, might want to get your feet wet somewhere else. Rating: - Bluegrass at it's bestGreat CD with top bluegrass artists and great soundtrack. Definitely worth buying. |
