Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential recording: Upon the release of Gish--the group's debut--in the summer of 1991, more than one rock aficionado hailed the Smashing Pumpkins as the best band to come out of Chicago since Ministry. A bold statement, yes, but one backed up by Billy Corgan's Hendrix-like riffs and searing signature guitar tone. Intriguing songwriting is evidenced from the start as well, with the driving, amped-up rock of "I Am One," "Siva," and "Tristessa" contrasted with the soothingly eerie psychedelic flavor of "Rhinoceros" and "Window Paine." Gish predates the band's movement toward the loop-based electronic sounds heard in their late-'90s works, yet the seeds for this transition are definitely apparent. Electro guru Tricky even sampled the backbeat from "Suffer" in the tributary "Pumpkin" on his sex-soaked Maxinquaye. Butch Vig shows off his chops as producer and cultivates signature dramatic moods on Gish, which helped put the Smashing Pumpkins on the map as one of the most important alt-rock bands of the '90s--much to the delight of the decade's disenfranchised youth. --Brad Zinser

I absolutely agree with everyone who says this is a great album. Is it better than Siamese Dream? I think so, and I believe this because this is a much more raw, less-polished Pumpkins. Far better than when they reached their commericial success zenith.
I actually wrote a full review for this on my website, feel free to check it out here:

Seriously, get this album, you'll like it.

I think that Nirvana's Nevermind completly overshadowed this beautiful album from a band that sounded unlike anything else at the time. When I listen to Gish I wonder to myself how tis posible that they werent the ones overshadowing Nirvana? Anyways I think the smashing pumpkins in general deserve alot more credit than given!

This copy was given as a gift, but I have owned this album for years. It is a must have for anyone who likes the Pumpkins or is a fan of 90's grunge/alt rock. While not as infectious or as consistently powerful as Siamese Dream, the album is imminently listenable and musically complex.

IMHO this is the best Smashing Pumpkins album - I listen to it more than any of their other albums, all of which I like too (except for Adore and on). Recorded very early in their career, it's a little raw, edgy, and just pure Smashing Pumpkins experimenting with their trademark sounds. It's almost like the sketchbook for Siamese Dream, so if you like that album I would buy this one, too! A must for any Smashing Pumpkins fan! And look - Billy Corgan had hair - that tells you how old it is!

Like Radiohead's Pablo Honey (or the Beatles' Please Please Me - the Beatles are my favorite band, so I like to use them as examples in my reviews as much as possible), Gish is sort of the stereotypical debut album. But while Pablo Honey is the stereotypical bad debut album in that it features the group doing more to imitate current trends than actually stake out on their own (though when Radiohead DID stake out on their own, man... it was amazing), and Please Please Me is the stereotypical average debut in that it shows a lot of promise but doesn't achieve it consistently, Gish is the stereotypical good debut, as it features the Pumpkins carving out their own niche. Nothing here's as good as highlights on Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie, with ... Read More:
