No recording can totally re-create the net of energy this powerful collective of women's voices casts over its audience, but Live at Carnegie Hall comes darn close. Here the group's members are free to develop songs as long as the spirit moves them--much longer, typically, than on their studio albums. Listen to the driven growls in the traditional folk chant "Run, Run, Mourner Run," the solemn contemplation of "Wade in the Water," and the circular wails and stirring percussion of "Denko" to feel Sweet Honey's spirit pounding through your bones. Live at Carnegie Hall also features several instructive yet tender introductions from founder Bernice Johnson Reagon, an amazingly theatrical presentation of Sonia Sanchez's poem "Letter to Dr. Martin Luther King," and a jazzy a cappella version of Paul Elouard's sensual poem "Peace." --Sally Weinbach Amazon.com: Recorded in Manhattan on November 7, 1987, this double live album includes 70 minutes of music and spoken introductions.  Rating:  - uplifting harmoniesThe first three tracks on this cd alone will make you happy you purchased it. Beatitudes starts with "blessed are.." and no matter how bad your case of the blues, you will raise your head by the end of the song. Run, Run, Mourner Run showcases not only the separate harmonies working together but a playful interaction with the live audience as well. Wade in the Water is a fluid, soulful rendition of this church song. All of the good reasons you might go to church are contained in these songs. The cd continues with adventurous harmony, political statements and rises to climactic endings as in Our Side Won. No one can beat their arrangements and voices working together - truly the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And in this case ... Read More: Rating: - their finest....this was a recording that i had years ago and finally felt the need to repurchase on cd. if there was any recording that one would require to cover your Sweet Honey In The Rock needs, this has to be the one....it is quite simply flawless... the energy of their live performance that comes across is amazing...the group is amazing and having had the luck to experience them live, to have a recording that matches that energy, majk & vitality is truly fortunate... do not hesitate to acquire this masterpiece... "Beatitudes" is one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear. "Dear Martin" is a wonderful performance of a poem. If you enjoy a variety of music, incredible harmonies, and worldly, timely subjects, you'll love this CD. |
