Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: This bouncy collection of instantly recognizable Hawaiian music is composed mainly of popular music standards such as "Blue Hawaii," "Pearly Shells," and "Polynesian Love Song." That's not to say you won't find a beach-full of traditional themes and melodies as well. "Papia-Tahiti Nui" includes a near-tsunami of instrumental motifs found on folk music samplers like the Dancing Cat label's Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters CDs, though here the unnamed performer flings out high-spirited riffs on an electric lap steel guitar instead of an acoustic instrument. The arrangements are crisp, clean, and to the point, relying on strummed guitar, steel guitar, vocals, and plenty of energy. This release is the first disc of the two-CD set All the Best from Hawaii: 40 Hawaiian Favorites, so for a larger dose of island bliss you might look to that collection. --Bob Tarte

Reeve's review which termed this the music of racism couldn't be more wrong. Having lived 30 yearsin Hawaii I can tell you that this is the real thing embodying the spirit of aloha. Mr. Reeves has had his brain corrupted by the racism and greed of Haunani Trask, an part-Hawaiian lawyer, professor and female chauvanist. The modern music he talks about is just Hawaiian hippie junk mixed with the music of a very few talented people.

It is exactly this type of music that perpetuates the degrading and predatory stereotypes of Hawai'i. The whole cd -- and others like it -- is packaged in the same way tourism is packaged: Hawai'i is a sweet, safe place with a servile culture, peaceful history, and disconnection from the "real world." Don't believe any of it. Hawai'i was invaded by the United States in a military coup and native Hawaiians subsequently stripped of power and respect. This is the music of that domination -- like all insidious racism, it is perpetuated "innocently" by reducing an entire people and culture to a cartoon. The real Hawai'i lies beyond Diamond Head in Makaha, Moili'ili, Hanalei. If you want to really know Hawai'i and Hawaiian music, purchase ... Read More:
