This is not "just" a jaw-droppingly excellent album songwriting and production-wise, but is a continually intriguing listen for musicians as well. In fact, this album could be favorably compared to such classics as Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sad Wings of Destiny in terms of musicianship and music composition.
There are several tricks and twists involving time signatures and anti-sonata form that rank this with the most imaginative Rock/Metal albums in history. The verse-chorus-verse-break-chorus/ I-V cliches of most metal are almost entirely abandoned on this cd. Instead what we get is involved and involving song structures, the antithesis of the sleep-inducing non-excitement of bands like Dream Theater and Avantasia (or, those ... Read More:

Lyrics and singing style took me a while to get used to. To this day, id still feel somewhat stupid playing this album in front of other people. However, this album absolutely rules. The guitar work is first rate. I actually like King Diamonds voice, especially when he's not screaming in really high pitched tones. I think this might be the most underrated metal album ever, or at least of the 80's. Bands like Metallica and Megadeth were big fans of this group and you can see why.

It's Amazing!! It's Exciting!! It's Bigger than 2 Girls 1 Cup and The Soulja Boy combined!! It's my 666th review, and naturally it only makes sense that King Diamond should fill this slot!
Oh yeah, the album is great too. Oozing with satanic shrieks, it was ahead of it's time in the day. To some it was actually considered scary and probably even threatening. Satanic lyrics are very prevalent these days in metal bands, and come across about as evil and controversial as Don Henley. King Diamond wasn't the first guy to write songs of the devil, but he may just be one of the first to really relish in it and shove it down the listener's throat. It sounds a bit silly now, but his performance is still great regardless, and you can always ... Read More:

Great satanic metal without being thrash. If you haven't heard King Diamond's voice before, you you may want to listen to it first as his voice ranges from very high pitched falsetto to guttural from one bar to the next. If you don't like falsetto voices then you probably won't like King Diamond. What really makes Mercyful Fate great is the talent of the musicians. Great talent all around with alternating lead guitars. Although I find 'Melissa' to be superior in terms of music, this album still delivers quite a punch. Every song on this album rocks!
