After reading the lastest negative reviews of this cd. I am compelled to answer the critique. Ok the cd is not perfect. But we are talking about recordings almost a century old. To be able to sit and listen to Caruso without annoyance is marvelous. The reviewer starts his dialogue by saying the Caruso's voice is over rated and this is where he is coming from. I have heard and seen the best and they are all compared to Caruso.

For years now, the signal to our kids that it is time to barrel down the stairs on Christmas morning has been Joy to the World from this recording, cranked to "11" on the stereo. This album is a fixture in our household at Christmas - glorious singing and orchestal accompaniment. Nothing modern, flashy, "different" or otherwise, just a magnificent, classic choral tribute to the season.

This recording is fantastic in every way. Mendez is truly one of the greatest to ever pick up a trumpet. From the outstanding renditions of latin classics "Tico Tico", "La Virgen De Macarena" and "Mexican Hat Dance" (which are all un-paralleled) to the flawless "Flight Of The Bumblebee" to the heartstring-pulling gem written by Leroy Anderson, "Trumpeter's Lullaby", this album is simply mint. As good as it gets. Mendez also plays amazing versions of "Danse Boheme" from Carmen, his own classic composition "Samba Gitana" and the grand finale, "Zigeunerweisen". However, the most touching moment comes on the live performance of "La Rosita", where Mendez plays ... Read More:

I have always loved this work, and when ever it is performed where I live, I enjoy going to see it. Menotti really understood how to make English opera sing. This recording is truly exciting, and it is very touching when the wisemen finally appear. My only complaint is the diction, particularly of the mother. There are times her singing resembles nothing more than shouting and screaming. The tone, or quality, of her voice is fine, very lovely in fact, but her words are lost in the torrent of sound. Her character is much like the character of the mother in Hansel and Gretal, and reflecting much of the same feelings. Menotti wrote music that was very excellent in providing these feelings, but with them is required the ability to understand what the woman ... Read More:

After having read all the glowing reviews I thought I would give this a try. I am very disappointed.
1. Vocals: the babes work well together when blending harmonies - but when it came to solo's I can't remember one song where the soloist had a memorable quality voice. This criticism seems a little hard to me given the amount of people in the pop/rock genre who are totally talentless and unable to hit a note - however, for a "mediaeval/folk" band the weakness of the voices stood out.
2. The musical arrangements didn't really strike me as folksy/mediaeval/pop/goth/ - just a mixed bag of swooping harmonies and below standard solo's.
If, like me, you enjoy talented mediaeval/goth/folk/acoustic bands I would suggest Stillevolk, ... Read More:
