Absolutly some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear. It's all in French, but it doesn't matter. All it will do is make you want to learn how to speak French. I was given a tape of a copied CD and had to buy the CD. If you like this one then also get THE FRENCH ALBUM by Celine Dion. Very similiar voices. The music on both is gorgeous....sticks with you and you wind up humming it to yourself all day.

Karita Matilla may be one of the finest Manons ever, she doesn't disappoint here. I was very impressed with Dwayne Croft's Lescaut. Dale Travis is almost too nasty as Gerante. I save the last comment for Marcello Giordani. He gives an impassioned reading as De Grieux. His "Non Non Pazzo Son" may not be the best you've heard, you won't likely have seen it sung with more feeling.
This is one of my favourite operas period and this would rank among the best recordings I have of it

Again, five stars for Mr. Gardiner. The tempi are thoughtfully chosen: neither rushed, nor sluggish. Throughout the entire work, as in his outstanding renditions Passions, Gardiner rests faithful to the music and its appropriate style, giving it an extra impulse which I find most pleasant. The quality of singing is unsurpassed: every leading instrument or vocal counterpoint can be followed with no difficulty.
Just as Rennaissance paintings, Bach's choral works are more than masterpieces. Their Christian themes, although branded "irrelevant" by politics-obsessed post-modernists, are CENTRAL to the works, far beyond being just tools subjugated to an artistic sense. Bach's Passions (not to mention Cantatas), Michelangelo's ... Read More:

carl orff may possibly be the worst composer of the 20th century. his music was militant and unoriginal. he essential was a one idea composer and it was an unoriginal, tasteless, bad idea at that. and this isn't even saying anything about the man himself. his personality was as distasteful as his music. that aside, if you must own this recording (and i have to) this is the one to own. at least previn (an underrated conductor) had a sense of humour while recording it.
