Discovered at an amateur jazz outing in Toronto when she was 20, Sophie Milman is now 24 and a hot ticket with a new album, "Make Someone Happy".
Having been born in Russia, Sophie spent most of her early years living in Israel, moving at the age of 16 to Canada, which is now her "home", and where she made the unlikely transition from bookish teenager to glamorous jazz ingénue.
She still has an aunt and uncle, and some more distant family living in Israel, whilst the rest of her close family are in Moscow.

Other musician seem to like these songs more than Cohen does; for the collection Essential Leonard Cohen he selected only one track from this album, Famous Blue Raincoat. Among those who highly esteem Songs of Love and Hate is Jennifer Warnes who covers Famous Blue Raincoat on her album of the same name which also contains a duet with Cohen on a longer version of Joan of Arc.

This album was my prime introduction to The Band, alongside the Classic Albums -documentary which got me to purchase this piece of work in the first place.

I feel that this is a great starting point to anyone interested in The Band and their music, and also quite essential to those (us) interested in classic rock.

Music is purely marvellous. I admit that it had to grow on me a bit - but then again that often is the case with new artists. Now I'm dreaming about the "Music From Big Pink" -album and especially "A Musical History" -boxset.

Highlights to me are (among others, actually the whole album is a highlight): Across The Great Divide, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Whispering Pines, Jawbone and King Harvest ... Read More:

The toast of the Canadian indie scene, Stars have made an album that deserves more attention than it got when it was initially released a couple of months back.
It's quite an 80s-sounding record - shifting between Bacharach-esque melodies ("My Favourite Book"), the occasional U2-style epic ("Take me to the Riot") and keyboard sounds that wouldn't have been out of place on a China Crisis B-side.
Lyrically, though, it's totally of its age and focuses on the fragile nature of modern love, from online dating to a romance that begins in the midst of a football riot.
Melodrama and melody have always been a good combination and Stars pull it off with style.

Apart from BLUE, most of the people who know the music of Joni Mitchell appreciate, above all, COURT AND SPARK (1974) and HEJIRA (1976). I won't blame it on them - those are beautiful, elegant albums. Nevertheless, I consider the trilogy formed by LADIES OF THE CANYON (1970), BLUE (1971) and FOR THE ROSES (1972), one of the finest works in pop music. The first chapter, released in April of 1970, is a group of songs written between 1966 and 1969.
