Tolomeo

from: Archiv Produktion

Release Date February 12, 2008
I had not heard a note of this opera until I purchased this recording of it, and I have instantly fallen in love with it. The opera contains some beautiful arias, has a very strong cast, and Alan Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco have yet again (see recording of "Rodelinda") proven themselves to be master-interpreters of Handel's operas. Ann Hallenberg as Tolomeo and Karina Gauvin as Seleuce are particularly notable in this very fine recording. Highly recommended.

A Farewell To Kings

CD-Charts > Music > Canadian Music
by: Rush

Release Date June 10, 1997
Classical guitar! What a way to begin this amazing album! The delicate sounds of the nylon strings immediately tells you that this is going to be something totally different than '2112'. The music sounds like a return to ancient times--even when the full electric three piece kicks in--it has the feeling of Olde England. The music is brash and edgy as '2112', but more complex and dynamic. The odd time signatures and shifting moods show a definite departure from heavy metal.

The production on "A Farewell to Kings", and on the album as a whole is so sweet and rich and warm. There is a huge leap in quality over the previous albums. It is obvious that more time was taken to craft this record.

"Xanadu" has such a cool opening. ... Read More:

Wake Up and Say Goodbye

Release Date September 23, 2008
I can tell you that this is a great album, but that won't help at all since that doesn't really give a clear picture of what I mean. One word that can sum up this album though is ENERGY. That is the key to the entire album. David Usher surpasses himself. Though his days with Moist are so far away, he still resonates with the same youth as back in the day. His song writing talents are at their peak. There is a pulse in the songs, a rush. And it starts so wonderfully well.
The first song is "The River", which is interesting since it plays on his first solo success, "St. Lawrence River". It is interesting since it gives you a good indication of what to expect. He is taking themes he covered earlier and brining them to the next level. In the case of the river, ... Read More:

Small Miracles

by: Blue Rodeo

Release Date September 25, 2007
I bought this cd the day it was released; I immediately tore it out of its package and threw it into the cd player of my car. I sat in front of the store in the parking lot for an hour listening to every single song.

I was so taken by the cd that for the next 3 months, I listened to it every day until they started the national tour in January. Every song on that cd has a special meaning behind it. If you listen to the words individually, you will understand why they wrote them.

Blue Rodeo doesn't just write mindless babble like the majority of the artists today; Small Miracles is the proof of that; just listen and you will understand.

Again

by: Buffalo Springfield

Release Date September 07, 1999
Buffalo Springfield Again (1967.) Buffalo Springfield's first album.

With Buffalo Springfield's 1966 debut, they didn't really perform anything revolutionary with their country/folk rock hybrid sound, and thus, went unrecognized by the casual rock and roll fan of the day. This was a shame, because the band's fusion of the styles proved to be one of the finest of its time. The band featured Stephen Stills and Neil Young, two future rock legends - and this is where their mainstream musical exposure began. The band followed up 1966's debut with their sophomore album the following year. Read on for my review of Buffalo Springfield Again.

Many rock and roll artists fall victim to the sophomore jinx, a condition in which an artist's second album fails to top ... Read More:

Summer Side of Life is my personal favourite of Gord's, but this one is right up there. Simple, unpretentious, wonderful songs. If you like Lightfoot and haven't heard this album I strongly recommend you give it a listen

High Class In Borrowed Shoes

CD-Charts > Music > Canadian Music
by: Max Webster

Release Date October 25, 1995
this is one of my favorite albums period
Max are best described as classic rock meets frank Zappa
and this album shows Max at there wacky best
"the title track", "gravity","in context with the moon"
"america's veins"
and the brilliant "Oh war"are classic hard rock with more changes within the song then usual (thanks to the zappa influence)

Words to words and "On the road" are a couple of fine ballads and exemplify the talents of fifth member lyricist Pye Dubois
We also get the first taste of the fine singing voice
Of keyboardist Terry Watkins with the moody melodic "Rainchild"

Also this is Kim Mitchell at his best certainly one of the most underated guitarists he smokes ninety ... Read More:

Love Scenes

CD-Charts > Music > Canadian Music
by: Diana Krall

Release Date August 26, 1997
"These songs are indeed about romance. But to me there is a broader and more personal attachment to each of the songs than the standard definition of romantic love might imply. I think that these songs represent the strength of love, including the love of family and friends. But rather than describing my own thoughts about each song, it is my hope that all of you who listen to the music and read the lyrics will discover and imagine your own personal "love scenes" among the mountains, oceans, rain and gardens of these songs." ~ Diana Krall ~

With this charmingly romantic CD "Love Scenes," Diana Krall once again has proven that she's got what it takes to be a modern-day jazz diva. Over the years, I've had the great pleasure of listening to some of the loveliest music courtesy of Diana Krall, who ... Read More:
