My musical tastes have changed alot over the years but I have always apreciated great songs. You could spend a fortune and not have a better compilation of songs than this two cd set. This is early Lightfoot, with bare recording techniques that strip away the layers of pop overproduction and leave just a Man and his wonderful music. Lightfoot was obviously younger here and his songs reflect that. from lost loves to social injustice, boredom and restlessness, Lightfoots songwriting skills combined with beautiful guitar work and his rich baritone create a listening experience I have never equalled on any cd. Just listen. What a treasure, and what an underappreciated musical talent.

It seemed as if Kenny Wheeler set this record up to provide his sidemen with a chance to boost their reputations enormously. Wheeler sets up the CD with his swooping solo over the changes and then Keith Jarrett produces some of the most lyrical piano playing on record. His solo transition on the first track is one of the high points of the album. Dave Holland seems to have ears the size of a house for everything that he picks up and responds to and sometimes seems like a rock in the middle of all the swirling music around him. Jack DeJohnette has a great solo where he stays on his cymbals for so long that when he finally plays one of his toms it feels like finally stepping on firm ground after an atmoshperic ride. Wheeler's writing is consistantly original ... Read More:

There are people who would contend that 'Comes a Time' is Neil Young's finest work. While it is truly a beautiful collection of songs, what it lacks is a demonstration of Neil's versatility, something clearly established on works such as 'After the Goldrush' or 'Rust Never Sleeps'. Neil can rock, and Neil can psychedelicize (a word coined by The Chamber's Brothers, doncha' know...), but that's not what 'Comes a Time' is about. 'Comes a Time' is a country/folk album cast from the same mold as his best selling album, 'Harvest', but superior to 'Harvest in two respects:
1) Young is more mature, as a composer, as a musician, and most importantly, as a person. He is for instance, able to bring in the 'Gone With the Wind Orchestra' without allowing his ... Read More:

The world of pop could use a lot more pop like Tegan and Sara's, and less posturing on MTV with a computerized voice.
And the identical twins show even greater variety in their fifth full-length album, three years after the Juno-nominated "So Jealous." In "The Con," they basically polish their existing guitar pop, but fill the sprightly melodies with confusing experiences and sorrowful romances.
It opens with a delicate piano ballad, framing a pretty, poignant song about the confusion and struggles of gay people. "To my heart confusion rose against/the muscles fought so long/to control against the pull of one/magnet to another magnet to another magnet," Tegan and Sara Quin sing together in shifting melodies. "I look into the mirror/for ... Read More:

I love how Joni Mitchell sings about social justice including the environment. I've always loved her because she's a rebel and her lyrics go way beyond the usual ones of love songs. And this CD only reinforces why I love her. She just keeps getting better.

Neil Young (1969.) Neil Young's first solo album.
In the sixties, Neil Young played with Stephen Stills in a band called Buffalo Springfield. Unfortunately, the band only scored one major hit, For What It's Worth, and the band disbanded shortly after. Stephen Stills went onto join forces with David Crosby (The Byrds) and Graham Nash (The Hollies), while Neil Young wanted to pursue a solo career. He would play briefly with the supergroup that his Buffalo Springfield bandmate joined, but for the most part, he would be focusing on his solo career. Early in 1969, he released his first album as a solo artist, which was self-titled. Read on for my review.
For Neil Young's solo debut, he follows the basic styling of gloomy pop-rock with a touch of psychedelia. ... Read More:

If Harmer's recording career is a cookbook then this chapter has my favorite recipies. Climb a Mountain is lyrically intriguing, chock full of sensitive and thoughtful musicianship, and, of course, front and centre is Sarah's always compelling voice and turns of musical phrase. Another beauty from the siren of Lowville.

Reprise/ Warner presents "CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE" [Special Edition], featuring pop vocalist of the millennium Michael Buble, the Vancouver crooner with his latest release with new material and some vintage standards --- Canadian crooner's third studio release, is about as responsible as it gets --- featuring an unforgettable youthful style that takes you back to the '40s, '50s and '60s --- listening to every tune on this album brings back memories of Nat King Cole (one of my favorite singers of all time), Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra as they were crooning favorite standards of the day --- Buble is a cross between James Dean and Elvis Presley in appearance, with the style and ability of Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin --- Michael has the uncanny ability to nail each track with his signature ...
