I have listened to the tracks on Deutsche Grammophon's site for this album(http://www2.deutschegrammophon.com/html/special/netrebko/us/sites/tracklist.html) and must rush to give this review. I have followed all of Anna Netrebko's career and I am amazed at how this amazing and beautiful singer never ceases to amaze. The sensational beauty and clarity of her voice shines brighter than the exquisite diamonds she often wears. After the milestones of her Russian album, her Traviata at Covent Garden, her Manon in Vienna and Berlin, her Berlin concert with Domingo and Villazon among other gala performances, it was difficult to imagine how she was going to stay at such superlative heights. In 2004, any recording by Luciano Pavarotti (Decca`s own house tenor) will seem great to many people. But not so much because of Pavarotti, but more so because there aren`t any really good tenors today. On this CD, there is however just too much of Pavarotti. He doesn`t sound romantic(Bohème or Madama Butterfly) and certainly not dramatic(Pagliacci).
His voice, although he sings with some freedom and brilliance in the upper register when his breathing allows it, does not evoke exstacy or other overwhelming feelings. But he is certainly famouse, no doubt about that. This CD is for beginners in Opera.
And therefore it is OK. But Pavarotti is merely one of many good singers, and there were better singers and greater artists before him. Two of them ... Read More:

Even though this does not erase the memories of Renee Doria's divine Thais (Excerpts exist) this is the most magnificent complete Thais. Other studio-recs like the one with Sills and Moffo each came too late for the leading lady in question. Thais needs the quality of a full lyric soprano with a huge range--> Renee Fleming. Fleming, who must be praised for not recording just the "easy" warhorses (Violetta, Mimi etc.) but rarities like Thais, Rusalka, Rosmonda, Alcina, Blanche etc. instead. Like in her Rosmonda she dazzles the listener with heavenly pianissimi (The MIRACULOUS note on "Dans la cité céléste nous nous rétrouvero(...)ns!" is divine!) ... I don't believe there is any one "best" version of this ever-popular opera, but this is my favorite of recorded Traviatas, and for those who value beautiful singing and state-of-the-art sound, it remains a top choice. It is complete and uncut; it wears supremely well; it has given me, and continues to give me, more musical pleasure than any other La Traviata.

La Traviata is really a three-character opera, and here the three principals, Sutherland, Bergonzi, and Merrill, are three of the great voices of the second half of the twentieth century, all singing highly congenial roles, all captured in their vocal primes. None of them was known as an insightful vocal actor who plumbed the psychological depths of a role, and listeners who put that quality foremost ... Read More:

Lanza did have the same voice teacher as Gigli whose name was Enrico Rosatti (sp?.Lanza had a radio show and became very popular and with his big ego,he walked out on his voice teacher who filed a law suite for Breach of Contract.Don't remember how that came out.No doubt that Lanza had a beautiful voice,but he was never an accomplished singer.He had too much of a tendency to force his voice.An example would be his recording of Non Ti Scordar Di Me,which IMO should be sung as a love song alla Gigli and di Stefano and not like a forceful version of Otello.I believe that Lanza was blessed with a beautiful voice but did not take the time to learn how to use it correctly.
