.. would have done this on her own I'd have added the fifth star to my review! Maybe I'm a little partial (I'm a big fan of miss kd) but I think that this project would have been managed so much better by kd alone.
Probably she would have choosen a different kind of production, (by T Bone Burnett) that sometimes is a little... anonymous, flat, to much classicaly jazz.

The highlights of the project are "A kiss to build a dream on", "Exactly like you" and mainly "That luky old sun", probably the most touchy standard version of the album.. and kd is alone. In any case, I recommend this album, unless you really can't bear Tony's voice.
You won't be disappointed by kd's talent.

I know, I know--it's heresy. Let me say first that I am a big Tony Bennett fan. The arrangements are out on the jazzy end of the scale, and if that is what you are looking for, you'll probably be happy. I like Christmas songs, even those done by jazz greats, done a bit more traditionally than this--hence, my disappointment. In addition, I didn't think Tony's voice sounded at its best on the recordings.

To give you an idea of jazz Christmas recordings I like, I would HIGHLY recommend two: "An Oscar Peterson Christmas" (1995) and "Silent Nights, A Christmas Jazz Album" by Chet Baker and Christopher Mason (1986).

Duets: An American Classic

Tony Bennett is the latest vocalist to turn to younger singing partners to bolster his declining years.
The octogenarian crooner has won Grammys for this sort of thing before - the likeable 2003 album he did with k.d. lang.
And she's back - though much further down the guest list - on this 20-track all-star cosmopolitan effort.
But what a slog it is.
Sure, Bennett's voice is still good in his 80th year whether he's doing his trademark matter-of-fact delivery or belting out the occasional lung-blasting high-note on the closing "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" with George Michael.

Ultimate

With the delivery of some of his biggest hits on Columbia, Tony holds his own and then some with croonin' songs. He sings them as if he wrote them which of course he didn't. The only dud on this collection of 20 songs is 'Blue Velvet' which should have been left to Bobby Vinton. I believe Tony left Columbia because they forced him to record material he didn't like. Maybe Blue Velvet was one of them?? Of course San Francisco is on this set plus Rags to Riches, Because of You, etc etc.
Great album to have in your collection.

Playin W/My Friends Bennett

If you love both Jazz and Blues, then this CD is a near-perfect combination. The songs are blues, the scales are blues, but the singing & overall feel leans more towards Jazz. This makes it more upbeat than a typical Blues CD. Although Tony shows he's still a star crooner with a voice that defies his age, his guests are really what makes this CD worth buying. When my wife first heard his duet with Diana Krall, ''Alright, Okay, You Win,'' she was instantly hooked (the title alone peaked her interest). My entire family sings along in the car with B.B. King & Tony on ''Let the Good Times Roll.'' Stevie Wonder and his harmonica really shine in ''Everyday I have the Blues.''
